Every year, I make a chair as a birthday gift for my wife, and sometimes I unexpectedly create something that can be turned into a product.

The reason why it is unexpected is that it is not for a customer, a contest, or product development, so there is no pressure and they are simply having fun trying out new structures, which often results in the creation of a failed product.

The chair was designed with the image of people sitting in it while cooking in the kitchen or drinking beer while reading a book.

The seat height is 600 mm.

There is a middle board 400 mm below that, so you can sit on it just like a normal chair.

The challenge this time was to construct the chair using the minimum number of parts: four legs, a seat, and a middle plate, all made from thin materials just 22 mm thick.

Instead of using parts such as bases or bases to connect the legs, we decided to assemble the seat and middle board directly to the legs as part of the structure.

We made the new discovery that by assembling the legs and seat using a "dovetail joint" and the middle board using a "half joint", we could achieve greater strength than if we used a base or cutout.

By deliberately hiding the dovetail joints, we were able to eliminate the problem of misalignment over time that is a major drawback of dovetail joints.

It's always so satisfying when, after lots of trial and error, I come up with a new idea.

Each individual component is extremely simple, but by adding small details, it is possible to achieve a dignified appearance.

I was reminded once again that "God is in the details."
