The second installment in the series following the previous work, Cocoda cabinet.
Usually, when designing storage furniture, the focus is on the box, but like the previous work, we were inspired by the design method of a chair, which is made up of legs and a frame, and aimed to create storage furniture that is three-dimensional rather than flat.
The manufacturer's convenience was ignored, and their own personal preferences were prioritized, resulting in a design that would make the craftsman cry, with even more effort and hassle added.
In this way, we once again completed a drawing full of complex angles and curves, which is unusual for storage furniture.
To match the grain of the flat door and the drawer on the front, a single piece of solid wood was first made and then cut out. The wood was then cut so that the grain was exactly where the left and right doors meet, emphasizing that it was made from a single piece of wood.
The tabletop was shaped with a plane to express both softness and sharpness, and the connection to the legs was carved with a knife, just like the finish on the chair legs and top board, to create a sense of unity.
The doors are made of solid wood that has been joined together at an angle to create a rounded shape, and by leaving the sharp edges that are unique to solid wood rather than the smooth roundness of molded plywood, the three-dimensional shadows accentuate the entire piece of furniture. Carved handles are embedded into these edges.
We also paid particular attention to the way the doors and drawers open and close, as well as the hinges, aiming to create a contrast between the soft-close function that closes slowly and the ultra-analog feel of solid wood furniture.
The shelf dowels are made of machined brass, which changes over time, and even the screws that secure the hardware were carefully designed.
The tabletop is 950mm high so that it can also be used as a small counter. When the shelves on the left and right storage compartments are installed in the center, both the top and bottom can accommodate A4 size items, and by raising or lowering the adjustable shelves or removing them, the maximum storage height can be increased to 640mm.
The height under the legs is such that even cleaning robots can pass through, making cleaning easy.
