Ebony is widely distributed throughout Southeast Asia, but it grows very slowly, taking approximately 200 years to reach a diameter of 18 cm. Its popularity has led to overharvesting, and high-quality ebony is now rarely available on the market. This makes it an extremely rare wood. Its hardness and durability are exceptional, with a deep, jet-black color and a smooth, oily surface that develops a subtle sheen when polished. The jet-black ebony, characterized by its distinctive core grain, is called "genuine ebony" or "shinkuro," and is the rarest type. The type with a striped grain of black and pale red is called "striped ebony." This watch case is made of genuine ebony, a rare, deep, jet-black color. Ebony, along with rosewood and ironwood, is considered one of the three great Chinese woods. Due to its rarity and beauty, it has long been prized as a material for high-quality crafts such as tea utensils, furniture, musical instruments, and Buddhist altar implements. Its value has endured, as seen in the treasures of the Shosoin Repository and the burial goods found in the pyramids.

[Features of KOMA bespoke case]

□Wood grain matching

By cutting each piece side by side, the grain of the wood connects, and with the utmost care, the grain of each piece is matched meticulously, using the aesthetic sense and technique of a skilled craftsman, to make the most of the natural beauty of the wood.

□Three-sided fastening

By joining the top, side, and front panels at a 45-degree angle, the wood grain is not interrupted, resulting in a beautiful finish, and the joints are less likely to shift over time, making it stronger and more difficult to achieve.

□ Assembly

Assembling the three-sided fastening is a delicate task that can only be accomplished by hand.

Dozens of special tools, such as hammers and hammers, are used to fasten the wood between the upper and lower boxes, making it a difficult process in which even the slightest amount of force applied can cause the wood to go out of alignment.

□Tongue processing

Insert 0.5mm wood pieces into the corners of the three-sided joint to reinforce them.

This increases the strength and creates beautiful designs that can only be achieved through handwork.

□Finishing/painting

Polishing with a plane and sandpaper brings out the grain and brings out the beauty of the wood to the fullest. By sealing the surface before oil painting, you can achieve an amazingly smooth texture that is less likely to develop ring stains.

*We do not use urethane paint or coloring as this would diminish the beauty and texture of the wood.

□Hidden hinge

There are no hinges visible on the back of the box when it is closed.

The inside of the box is lined, so the metal fittings are not visible from any angle, and the sleek design of the box and the beauty of the wood grain are not compromised.
